Newshounds

Their newest classroom program, Newshounds, was ready for the next stage of development after a very successful pilot.

Tested with over 2,000 teachers , it was time to take their valuable feedback and improve on the platform's user experience (UX).

Despite the program's well-received content, feedback highlighted challenges with the technology and delivery mechanisms used, impacting the overall effectiveness of the program.

The goal was to enhance the Newshounds platform to deliver a more engaging and accessible experience for teachers by streamlining content, incorporating gamification to encourage student participation, and ensuring ease of future updates through a robust CMS.

A platform built for scale and engagement

Miroma Project Factory (MPF) stepped in to overhaul Newshounds with two key objectives:

Re-platform the programfor greater scale
Improve engagementwith both teachers & students

Our approach involved a complete redesign of the user interface (UI) and UX,

Simplified Lesson Delivery

We reduced lesson time from 90 minutes to 40 minutes, aligning with classroom needs and teacher feedback.

Enhanced Gamification

Playful elements such as token-based rewards and a futuristic cityscape to measure progression were introduced to keep students engaged without sacrificing the educational value of the content.

Content Management System (CMS) Integration

We implemented a robust CMS, allowing Squiz Kids to seamlessly update lessons and ensure the platform evolves alongside fast-moving media trends.

Teacher-Centric UX

The platform was redesigned to prioritise ease of use for educators, enabling them to focus on teaching rather than troubleshooting the system.

The impact?

Empowering educators and students alike

With MPF’s improvements, Newshounds has been re-launched as a streamlined, scalable resource that empowers educators to deliver media literacy lessons with ease.

The new design allows Squiz Kids to continually update their content, ensuring their programs stay relevant in a rapidly changing media landscape. Teachers now have an intuitive, engaging tool at their fingertips, to enable educators across the country (and the world!) to foster critical thinking in students.

The Squiz Kids team have been key opinion leaders for bringing media literacy and critical thinking skills directly into the Australian school curriculum, and have been major contributors to the Australian Government's Parliamentary Enquiry on Social Media and Australian Society in 2024.
